The Giuliano Cucco Archive

Giuliano Cucco (1929–2006) was a versatile Italian artist whose creative work spanned painting, illustration, drawing, photography, sculpture and writing.

This project is dedicated to preserving, documenting and sharing his remarkable artistic legacy, bringing to light an extensive archive that includes artworks, writings, photographs and documents, many of which have rarely or never been seen by the public.

Created in Rome in the 1960s by writer John Miller and artist Giuliano Cucco, Winston & George remained unpublished for nearly fifty years. Decades later, the project was brought back to light and published by Enchanted Lion Books in 2014, bringing Cucco's vivid illustrations to the public. The book tells the story of the friendship between Winston, a crocodile, and George, a mischievous crocodile bird.

Red Spider Hero

Created in Rome in the 1960s as part of the collaboration between John Miller and Giuliano Cucco, Red Spider Hero remained unpublished for nearly fifty years before being released by Enchanted Lion Books in 2015. Cucco's colorful illustrations accompany the story of Harry, a tiny red spider mite whose imagination takes him on adventures far beyond his small patch of sidewalk. The book was named a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2015.

Before I Grew Up

Published in 2021, Before I Grew Up grew out of Giuliano Cucco's remarkable archive of paintings. Decades after their earlier collaboration in Rome, John Miller reconnected with Cucco's work and contacted his son Giovanni, who was cataloging the large collection of paintings left by his father. From these works, Miller assembled a story inspired by Giuliano's childhood, allowing the paintings themselves to lead the narrative. The book brings together 30 oil paintings and marked a major public presentation of Cucco's work.

The Creation

Originally created for the children of La Casa dei Bambini

The Creation was originally conceived and created by Giuliano Cucco as a large-format book for the children of La Casa dei Bambini, the Montessori school in Rome founded by his wife, Clara Brogini, where Giuliano also collaborated and contributed to the life of the school. Through a series of pastel drawings, he offered children his own visual interpretation of the biblical story of Creation. Years later, the original work was brought into print by his son Giovanni, making this unique project available to a wider public.
